Studies in Poetry
One of the books in our "Writing and Poetry Series." This book was written as a continuation of Moping Melancholy Mad: An Introduction to Poetry. The emphasis in this book is to show the student that poetry is the relating of experience through words. Chapter one is an essay by Arlo Bates on "Foundations of Work," an argument that any appreciation of literature must come with an intelligent reading of the work. Other chapters offer an objective approach to poetry and information about imagery, metaphors, personification, metonymy, paradox, irony, allusion, and tone in poetry. Some of the poets represented in this book are Bryant, Hopkins, Dickinson, Browning, Herrick, Donne, Frost, Tennyson, Milton, and others.
